The Americans are all googling "Supercycle" right now, and being supremely disappointed.

I remember doing the Tour de Montréal ride one year and being in a lead group surrounded by shiny bikes (we were rolling around 38 km/h at that point, so not exactly hammering) when this kid rode up on an OLD white Supercycle, sneakers on platform pedals, no helmet, wearing a backpack, and rode through and off the front of the group. I have little pride on the bike, so I thought it was hilarious, but some people in the group were very grumbly for the rest of the ride.

I've done that ride. Love being on the front because you can ride the loop a second time before the roads are reopened.

Going to try and make the poll new every Wednesday with a little conversation starter written by me and heavily edited (possibly rewritten) by the great KOAT! So this week we are talking tri bikes and price points. After all, the bike industry has now convinced us that the minimum beginner level price is around $2500 to $3000, see P2, IA16, etc. Is this madness or just the cost of doing business if you want to go faster? Weigh in, vote in the poll and let TRS know what you think!

I would love to have a shiny invincible carbon spaceship.

The unfortunate reality is that something affordable with good performance(that fits) is what I can do.

Hey Jake, just don't get that spaceship that visited Cartmann in Southpark. WTC officials frown on rocket assisted forward thrust!

I love my bike porn as much as the next guy, but I agree. My bikes tend to be gently used bargains that I then add small upgrades that I already have. (hydration, powermeter, gps computer, etc.) I would love to be able to just walk in to my LBS and walk out with a super bike, but it's just not going to happen.

It's pretty much like Pesci said here, just insert "tri bikes" at the end.

Gently used is the way to go. Fortunately I have a friend who loves to upgrade bikes often and we are roughly the same size. P3, mountain bike and Scott Plasma have all come from him.

I usually get a year end clearance of the old models with Ultegra level components.

I haven't bought a new bike since 2008 so when I show up to races or for workouts, it's on an old POS, at least that's what it feels like, but I refuse to pay top dollar for anything until I improve the engine first. An expensive piece of machinery isn't going to make me a faster cyclist, but working my ass off to ride hard on the old, crumbly bikes I have certainly will. Do I want a BMC TM01, fuck yes!! Do I need one? No. If I was rich would I buy one? What the hell do you think?!
