We don’t need to tell you again that Oceanside 70.3 is very popular and very competitive, right? You’ve already heard? Still, let me reiterate the point...

I don't feel bad for her. Rules are rules and she didn't follow them, and it was poor form for Siri to complain. I am sure Ellie wasn't the only one to be DQd.

Why the hard rule for the pros? Pros already have a unique set of rules, and they're chasing a living, thus they should be allowed to choose how hard they want to chase. Just like sketchy descents in bike racing. Back off if you must, but they should be allowed to control their own race. Sure, you can argue nobody gets an advantage since everyone has to go 25, but that's not true, as more fearful riders benefit from slowing the good bike handlers.
But that isn't the point - the point is that the rule *was* in place for the pros, everyone knew it, and someone broke a known rule that, while slight, could have given her an unfair advantage. Again, you could see someone appealing, or thinking it's dumb, or whatever - but for a professional coach to directly chastise Ironman on social media over it is probably not a good idea.
It is not something that can be appealed either. Over the speed limit you are DQ'ed no questions asked. They have timing mats at top and bottom of descent to determine average speed for the descent. About as fair as you can get. Plus, it's :28 so hardly something that makes a difference unless you violate the speed limit.
Also, the pros are given a faster limit of 35mph vs. 25mph for the amateur athletes.
The accident where the man died was in the second year of the races (early 2000s) and he flew over the guardrail and was decapitated. So, the marines don't want to deal with that type of incident again.
I will gladly abide by the rule because the race course is free of cars and that's awesome.
