We don’t need to tell you again that Oceanside 70.3 is very popular and very competitive, right? You’ve already heard? Still, let me reiterate the point...

@Aaron Webstey Yes, she is fucking serious. Everyone knew about the speed zone, I knew about the fucking speed zone. Someone died there a few year ago, hence the speed zone and the severity of the penalty for those not adhering to the speed limit in the speed zone.

I don't feel bad for her. Rules are rules and she didn't follow them, and it was poor form for Siri to complain. I am sure Ellie wasn't the only one to be DQd.

When I read this I thought it was saying that she was speeding in a car after the race. Saw the Twitter thread. Her bad. I retract my incredulity.

All we have to do is up our editorial game, be more professional, and write better articles, and Ironman will give us media access. Allegedly.

@Aaron Webstey yeah, #sworry. My post was ambiguous. I am sure you saw my comments to Siri on twitter. Speed zone is talked about quite a bit at the pro meeting. Pretty easy rule to follow, especially when they have 3 large signs going down the hills showing your current speed in MPH. So, you don't even need a bike computer! And they told us the KPH in the meeting too. But, Siri was still #somad.

I'm with Mark.  I've never done Oceanside, never been to the race, probably never will and yet I knew about the speed limit.  Maybe if Siri listened to the Triathlon Preview Show?  Just sayin.

I'm with Siri on this one, y'all. I get she broke the rules and was DQ'd for something she knew about. But...

Why the hard rule for the pros?  Pros already have a unique set of rules, and they're chasing a living, thus they should be allowed to choose how hard they want to chase. Just like sketchy descents in bike racing. Back off if you must, but they should be allowed to control their own race. Sure, you can argue nobody gets an advantage since everyone has to go 25, but that's not true, as more fearful riders benefit from slowing the good bike handlers.

I think you can make the argument that the rule should not be in place for the pros (although I think the military base makes the rules, plus someone died there, etc ... I don't feel like arguing for or against that).

But that isn't the point - the point is that the rule *was* in place for the pros, everyone knew it, and someone broke a known rule that, while slight, could have given her an unfair advantage. Again, you could see someone appealing, or thinking it's dumb, or whatever - but for a professional coach to directly chastise Ironman on social media over it is probably not a good idea.

@KHilgendorf Base mandates the rule. No speed limit on the descent, no race on the base. We are also required to wear our bib numbers on the bike (not required at other races).

It is not something that can be appealed either. Over the speed limit you are DQ'ed no questions asked. They have timing mats at top and bottom of descent to determine average speed for the descent. About as fair as you can get. Plus, it's :28 so hardly something that makes a difference unless you violate the speed limit.

Also, the pros are given a faster limit of 35mph vs. 25mph for the amateur athletes.

The accident where the man died was in the second year of the races (early 2000s) and he flew over the guardrail and was decapitated. So, the marines don't want to deal with that type of incident again.

@EmilyCocks That's a little bit better, allowing you 35. And yeah, I know it's all of about a half mile stretch, so not a huge deal on time (either lost of gained). It just seems odd to have a speed limit imposed in a race. That's akin to NASCAR not driving in the rain. It doesn't make any sense to me from a racing standpoint, but them's the rules, and you gotta play by them or risk the consequences.

@KHilgendorf they are just "neutralizing" the race for 28 seconds. Fine by me. There are plenty of places and other descents on that course to gain time on your competitors. It's a race to us, but to the military it is an event on their base and they want everyone to be safe. And, liability probably plays into as well.

I will gladly abide by the rule because the race course is free of cars and that's awesome.
